SC DHEC Shifts to eColi from Fecal Coliforms:

DHEC has filed a proposal to EPA to revise regulations to allow water quality standards to be based on E.coli bacterial rather than FC, which have long been the standard.  Details available here:   http://www.scdhec.gov/environment/water/wq_bacteria.htm

DNA Sequencing Methods for Water Quality and Aquatic Ecosystem Monitoring (A Possible Future Development):

The following two sources provide a little background on using DNA sequencing methods for water quality and aquatic ecosystem monitoring and lead to additional links.  This is an area of research that is beginning to be applied in an experimental context.  The method is contingent upon the development of a public reference library of species identifiers.  To this end, a Barcode of Life Database (BOLD) is being developed, and the Consortium for the Barcode of Life (CBOL) is promoting its use.
